Scientific researcher I dr. Carmen MARIAN       

I. Born on the 3rd of January 1952, Iaşi, Romania.

II. Graduate (promotion 1975) of the Textile-Leather Department, “Gh. Asachi” Institute Iaşi. In 2001, I obtained the doctor’s degree at the “Gh. Asachi” Institute, Iaşi, with the thesis “Contributions to the basement of the process of conservation and restoration of the silk archaeological textiles”, scientific coordinator Prof. Dr. Mihai Ciocoiu. Between 1976-1977 I participated at the postgraduate course “The basis of the scientific restoration” organized by the National Center for the Improvement of the Culture Personnel, Bucharest, getting a diploma of restaurateur in the field of patrimony textiles. In 1978 I undertook a specialization in Great Britain at Victoria and Albert Museum, in the field of restoration – conservation of the patrimony textiles. In 2001 I participated at the international course of improvement in the field of conservation and restoration of the textile patrimony objects organized at Sibiu by the Center of Training and Formation of the Personnel from the Cultural Institutions.

III. Inside the Center for the Conservation - Restoration of the Cultural Patrimony - National Museum Complex „Moldova” Iaşi, I occupied the position of textiles engineer between 1975 – 1991, and the position of restaurateur between 1991 and 2001. Since 2001 I’ve been occupying the position of scientific researcher I; as lecturer, during the programs, am kept courses at the National Center for the Improvement of the Culture Personnel, Bucharest (1978), inside the Program of instructions for the religious cults’ personnel, Durău Ecumenical Center (2000) and inside the International course for the improvement in the field of the textiles – leather organized by the Center for the Formation of the Restaurateurs, Sibiu (2001). I also coordinate the theoretical and practical preparation of the specialists at the Laboratory for textile conservation-restoration, the Center for the conservation and restoration of the cultural patrimony - C.M.N.  “MOLDOVA”, Iaşi.  In 2004, I participated, inside the international program “Culture 2000” which took place at Constanţa, to the presentation of the project ‘‘Advanced On – Site Laboratory for European Antique Heritage Restoration”.

IV. The activity of scientific research evolves in the field of restoration – conservation of the textile patrimony objects and of the impression of textile materials on prehistoric pottery. In this direction, an important chapter of the activity is constituted by the investigation and conservation – restoration of the archaeological textiles dated for the XVIth – XIXth Century (conteş, hat, shroud, had covering), textiles that are located in the main exhibition of the History Museum, Iaşi. I also effectuated works of conservation – restoration of more than 350 textile pieces from the patrimony of the museums and cult places from Iaşi, Bucureşti, Botoşani, Vaslui, Neamţ. From the most significant pieces restored I mention: Furniture tapestry, Aubusson, XVIIIth Century, Peleş Museum collection; Tomb covering of Ioan, son of Vasile Lupu and of Tudosca, XVIIth Century, Three Hierarchs Monastery Collection from Iaşi; Epitrahil, XVIIth Century, Three Hierarchs Monastery Collection Iaşi; Epitaph “The Weeping of the Lord”, XIXth Century, Talpalari Church, Iaşi; Worked panels, XIXth Century, Cotroceni Palace collection, Bucureşti; Costume pieces and accessories (shawls, hats, umbrellas, fans, handkerchiefs, embroideries, laces) that belonged to personalities of the Romanian political and cultural life: the family of the ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza, the families of Mihail Kogălniceanu, Vasile Alecsandri, Mihail Sturza, Elena Negri, Aglae Pruteanu, Matei Millo, Miluţă Gheorghiu, Maria Burada). For the establishing of the strategies of conservation - restoration, I first do the scientific investigation of the patrimony textile objects (physic-chemical analysis of the component fibers and filaments, the analysis of the structure of the fabric, the evaluation of the decay status of the textile pieces through different methods of analysis – optic microscopy, electronic microscopy, chromatography, spectroscopy – analyses realizes through collaborations with different specialized institutes).  As expert restaurateur, I assure specialized assistance in the activity of conservation of the textiles located in the exhibitions and the deposits of the museums and cult places. I also granted specialized assistance during the archaeological research effectuated at Saint Sava Church and Barnovschi Church from Iaşi, at Mirăuţi Church – Suceava. Adjacent to the main activities I have an interest in prehistory, more precisely in the existence of domestic crafts in Neolithic. The results of my own research on the impressions of the textile materials identified on the Cucuteni pottery added new elements, of textiles techniques, to the already existent database.

V. Collaboration with specialists from the Republic of Moldavia on the basis of protocols signed by C.M.N. “Moldova” Iaşi, the Free International University from Moldavia and the Institute of Archaeology from Chişinău. The object of these collaborations was constituted by the conservation – restoration of some fragments of archaeological textiles discovered at Căpriana Monastery and the investigation of impressions of textile materials preserved on pottery fragments belonging to the Cucuteni – Tripolje civilization.

VI. The researches in the field of conservation and restoration of the textile patrimony objects materialized in the elaboration of 55 scientific communication presented at internal and external symposia and conferences. I participated at international scientific manifestations that took place in Italy, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Holland, and Check Republic.
