Short biography
Dumitru Dănuț Aparaschivei is a Senior Researcher (grade I) at the Institute of Archaeology of the Romanian Academy, Iași Branch, where he has been active since 2002. He obtained his PhD in History from the “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University of Iași, with a thesis focusing on the genesis and development of Roman urban settlements along the Lower Danube, awarded cum laude. He also completed postdoctoral research within the Romanian Academy. His research focuses primarily on the Roman and Late Roman periods in the Lower Danube region, with particular emphasis on urban development, processes of Romanization, and cultural interactions between the Empire and neighbouring regions. He has also contributed extensively to the study of ancient medicine, small finds, and aspects of daily life and mentalities in antiquity. Aparaschivei has extensive field experience, having participated in and coordinated numerous archaeological excavations at key sites such as Histria, Noviodunum (Isaccea), Ibida (Slava Rusă), Aegyssus (Tulcea), and Oltina. He has been responsible for multiple excavation sectors and has coordinated over 120 preventive archaeology projects across Romania. Since 2016, he has served as coordinator of the preventive archaeology sector within the Institute. He has been involved in numerous national and international research projects, including directing a postdoctoral project on Roman medicine in Moesia Inferior and participating in interdisciplinary and international collaborations. He has also organized scientific sessions within major international conferences, including the European Association of Archaeologists and the LIMES Congress. His work has been recognized with several distinctions, including the “A.D. Xenopol” Prize of the Romanian Academy.
