On the Fringe of the Empires. Society, Economy and Artefacts in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages (3rd-15th c. AD)

8 November 2023 @ 8:00 - 9 November 2023 @ 17:00

Accademia di Romania in Rome, in collaboration with the Institute of Archaeology in Iași and numerous academic and museum institutions from Romania and abroad, organised the international conference On the Fringe of the Empires. Society, Economy and Artefacts in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages (3rd–15th c. AD) on 8–9 November 2023. The event was part of a series organised by the Romanian School in Rome in connection with the exhibition Dacia. The Last Frontier of Romanity, hosted by the Museo Nazionale Romano – Terme di Diocleziano.

The conference explored the social, economic, and cultural transformations that characterised the transition from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages in Central and Eastern Europe, covering a broad chronological span from the 3rd to the 15th century. Particular attention was devoted to the peripheral and frontier regions of major empires and to their role as spaces of contact, interaction, and exchange. Frontiers were examined not merely as political or administrative boundaries, but as dynamic zones through which people, goods, technologies, ideas, and symbols circulated.
